The Basmala (In the Name of Allah)
Basics
The first verse of Surah Al-Fatihah is "Bismillahi ar-Rahmani ar-Raheem."
Al-Fatihah is the only surah where the basmala counts as its first verse — making it the first of the surah's seven total verses.
Saying the basmala means declaring that we begin in the name of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Say It Before Everything
Say the basmala before anything you do — reciting Qur'an, praying, signing a work deal, eating, or drinking — because the outcome of our efforts never materializes without Allah's permission.
Example: planting a seed. You plant it and water it, but everything after that is from Allah — the seed growing, generating energy, etc. You could plant a thousand seeds and Allah may cause none to grow, or plant just one that yields a plant with thousands of seeds. This teaches us that everything returns to Allah.
Looking deeply at anything, we realize we have no real control over outcomes.
The little control we do have was itself given to us by Allah — e.g., watering a plant requires the water, the knowledge that the plant needs water, and the muscles to deliver it — all from Him.
Even eating and drinking involve processes entirely beyond our control: the body absorbing water, delivering it to organs, digesting food, distributing nutrients, and eliminating waste — all made possible by Allah.
Saying "Bismillahi ar-Rahmani ar-Raheem" before any action is a reminder that everything comes from Allah, and doing so brings barakah (blessing) into our actions and their results, inshaAllah.
Benefits of Saying the Basmala
A safeguard against sin — making it a habit before every action serves as a reminder not to engage in something wrong (e.g., drinking alcohol, dealing in riba, taking a bribe).
A reminder of Allah's mercy — even if we sin or wrong ourselves, we're reminded that Allah is Al-Ghafur, Ar-Raheem (the Forgiving, the Merciful). Allah chose to open the Qur'an with Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem to emphasize His mercy — so even after a mistake, we can start again with the basmala, and Allah will forgive and help us, inshaAllah.
